Get second opinion: Though their reputation for causing infection still exists from cases many decades ago, currently iuds are very safe. As long as a competent physician places the iud, the risk of infection and infertility is extremely low. Before an iud is placed, the doctor will usually check for stds, to make sure the patient doesn't already have an infection.

IUD infection safety: Iuds are very effective contraceptives with low infection rates. See http://1.Usa.Gov/zxo9y1 for scientific evidence. Most infections come from STDs so if you are someone who has many STDs then this may not be a good option. You should check back with your doc to better understand why she/he believes you are such risk. I hope this helps, good luck.
