Some lung infections (like fungal infections) will trigger a response in the body in which the person's immune system surrounds the invading organisms with specific cells that form discrete clusters in attempt to wall the organism off from the host tissue. Over time, these can calcify. Non-infectious foreign material can also cause granulomas.
