Good question: Light suppresses melatonin release, even light from a digital clock. Therefore it will be harder to maintain your sleep and this will potentially cause sleep disruption, which in turn will adversely impact rem sleep. Even more importantly, it will impact deep phase sleep which is where you will get the most restorative sleep.
