No: Most streptococcus pyogenes (group a streptococcus) pharyngitis will resolve in 7 days even without treatment. Unfortunately there is then the risk of glomerulonephritis and rheumatic fever. An asymptomatic streptococcal carrier state is not uncommon in children and young adults especially in close quarters like barracks. Relapses of strep pharyngitis rather than chronic infection are common.
