Depends: Streptococcus pyogenes, the bacteria behind strep throat is naturally colonized in some folks. When it is actually infecting you, that is, provoking an immune response in you, it can produce significant problems if left unchecked including rheumatic fever and subsequent heart valve disease later.

Rheumatic fever: In New Zealand ten days of antibiotics are given(amoxicillin once a day) if you are Maori, a Pacific Islander, or living in a low socioeconomic area and aged 3-35yrs with a sore throat. These patients must see a health professional as soon as they can. Please contact your general practice, school clinic or pharmacy. New Zealand has high rates of serious heart damage from untreated strep throat
