SS, SC, Sb-thal: The letters refer to the form of the beta globin gene (a is normal, s is sickle cell, c is another form of beta globin). Ss is severe homozygous sickle cell anemia. Sc. Is moderately severe form. S-beta-thalassemia is variable disease where one beta globin is sickle and the other has a different mutation that reduces the amount of normal a made. Beta zero makes no a; it results in severe disease.
