Either: It can occur at either time. However hallucinations can occur as one is about to fall asleep or as they are about to wake up that are not necessarily associated with having a major pyschotic disorder.

Hallucination: I agree with dr. Fowler , hallucination that can be labeled as hypnagogic or hypnopumbic hallucination, can be normal, which can happens when going to sleep or walking up from sleep.
