Urine protein: Protein in urine is one of the earliest signs of kidney disease. Ask your physician for urine analysis for protein, confirm with urine protein/ creatinine ratio. Serum creatinine is also another test used to identify kidney problem. However, protein in urine identifies early kidney problem even before the creatinine levels increases in the blood.

Blood tests : You will need to have a basic chemistry panel that would include BUN and creatinine levels. If these are normal, for your age, weight, race and sex nothing more needs to be done. If your creatinine is above the normal age, you should see a nephrologist and have a 24 hour urine for creatinine clearance to get your kidney function quantified. You may also need a renal ultrasound to see your kidneys.
