Its possible: These lesions in the white matter can be caused by ms. Other possibilities include aging changes (chronic microvascular ischemia), tiny infarcts, migraine headaches, vasculitis, etc. That is why ms remains a clinical diagnosis and your doctor will use the MRI findings, your symptoms, and possibly other tests to see if ms is likely.

Possible but...: As dr. Daniel mentions, there are other possible causes of white matter lesions on mri's. I'm writing to mention another possible cause to consider is neuroborreliosis/lyme infection of the nervous system. Some docs feel half of those diagnosed with ms actually have lyme disease! see http://lymemd.Blogspot.Com/2009/01/doctor-do-i-have-lyme-or-ms.Html & http://www.Lymeinfo.Net/multiplesclerosis.Html.

Other thoughts: One 5 mm lesion does not fulfill mcdonald's criteria which was designed to define those individuals who are likely to develop ms by mri. Your doctor would probably want further testing including veps (visual evoked potentials), oct (optical coherence tomography), mris of the spine, labs, and possibly a lumbar puncture. Good luck and well wishes.

Not consistent: You have one lesion, and MS is "multiple sclerosis". Did you have head injury at one time? Other explanations exist. See a neurologist or neurosurgeon and explore what caused this lesion.
