An experienced pediatric cardiologist should be able to differentiate between a PFO& an ASD. Confusion can occur because they have fairly similar locations. In my opinion, congenital heart disease is the most difficult subspecialty in cardiology, especially if more serious heart defects are present. PFO is a very minor defect.

The foramen ovale is a window between the hearts upper chambers covered by a thin tissue flap. During fetal development the flap opens & diverts placental blood to bypass the unused lungs & go directly to the left heart to be pushed to the body. After birth, pressure changes closes the flap for good & blood goes to the lungs. It can remain open in some and it acts like an ASD with similar risk.
