The heart is a dynamic moving organ with a squeeze and a release phase. Both phases combine to produce one detected beat of a pulse. If you are feeling over your heart, you sense both phases, you will sense 2 movements per detected pulse beat. Add these up and it doubles your pulse rate.

In atrial fibrillation which is the most common form of irregular heart beat, the heart beats are of different intensity, not all being efficient enough to create a pulse wave. Talk to your cardiologist about your observation, meds will need to be adjusted at a minimum.
