A member asked:

In how much time can secondary hyperparathyroidism due to vitamin d deficiency become tertiary hyperparathyroidism? can it happen in 1 or 2 years of vitamin d deficiency? or will it require a longer period of time? i was deficient for about a year?

Dr. Jay Park answered

Hypocalcemia (low calcium level) resulting from severe vitamin D deficiency induces overproduction of parathyroid hormone, which is a secondary hyperparathyroidism. No tertiary hyperparathyroidism.
