Atenolol is not the first tier drug use for essential hypertension. However, in certain comorbid conditions atenolol can be used (a stone is used to kill 2 birds). If you do not have any comorbid condition such as cardiac arrhythmia, coronary heart disease, etc. then atenolol should not be used as the first tier drug but it is not an absolute contraindication, i.e. it can still be used. Good luck.
