I have just been prescribed topiramate for weight loss but after reading side effects i am unsure if it worth taking. my bmi is 31 and i need to lose weight but would love a second opinion before taking this medication?

The better approach would be to eat very healthy foods - fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, no sugar, no gluten foods (breads, cereals)- may have oats & rice and also eat only very low fat food and no processed food. That combo is about as healthy as you can eat. Then also exercise regularly starting with just walking quickly 20 minutes each day and work up to running. You are young, be healthy!

Dr. MacFarlane's advice is important. Topiramate has modest weight loss results at best, and agree that the adverse events are rather arduous. Would definitely seek a second opinion. You could also consider a virtual consult here at HT (www.connect@healthtap.com)
