Have a family member (m/36 years old) who is considered treatment resistant for schizophrenia. has tried for years different meds including clozapine which he had to stop due to side effects. is ect considered to be effective for schizophrenia? ty?

It really depends on what type of symptoms you are trying to treat. So, a psychiatrist can help answer this question. If there is significant depression associated with the symptoms, ECT can work very well. So, speak to the psychiatrist taking care of your family member, with the family member’s permission, to help make this decision. Good luck!

On occassion doctors do recommend ECT for schizophrenia. It would be best if your family member set up a consult with a Psychiatrist who does it and see if it is recommended for him.
