You ask good questions. The treating doctor can answer your concerns. Try apply a topical antibiotic, ie. Neosporin or polysporin. Cover with a bandaid Continue soaking. Takes time for the nail bed and nail matrix to heal. By four weeks should be healed. wait and see what grows out. If final nail apply topical anti fungal ( Lamisil) until nail has grown out. Prevent shoe irritation
