Adult swim only: Aquatic therapy can be quite beneficial. The resistance provided by the water can help strengthen the ankle joint. Bracing is not necessary if you are doing laps or resistance exercises. Although, swimming in the ocean can be tricky, where waves and currents can cause you to re-sprain your ankle(s). Be safe and take it easy.

Ankle sprain: Depends on the severity. If minor, then swimming would actually be a helpful resistance exercise. Let pain be your guide.
