Herpes zoster is caused by the varicella virus that was introduced into the body at some point in the past. It could be by natural infection or vaccination. Either way the virus hides out in nerve centers in front of the spine. If or when the immune surveillance of the body declines for whatever reason, poor health, illness, etc. the virus can travel down nerve routes and emerge as active zoster
