What causes excessive swelling on the lateral side of the knee? i also have very limited range of motion. i have a lump on the lateral side of the knee what could this be. cant bend or straighten the knee without excruciating pain. please explain?

Although absolutely NOT feasible to guess as to what damage has occurred in your knee, strongly urge you to see an orthopedic surgeon ASAP. Most likely you have damaged cartilaginous portions, but imaging will provide the answer. Treatment will be based on the extent of pathology.
