HSV can infect the eyelid or the eye itself (cornea and sclera). Symptoms almost always include pain, redness and discharge. A Dr can differentiate between a bacterial infection and HSV using specific dyes and sending a swab for culture. There are totally different medications used depending on what the infection is caused by. For bacteria, antibiotics work, for viruses, antivirals are needed.
