The babies head is the largest feature to exit the birth canal. If it follows the body it can get stuck & compress the after following umbilical cord stopping oxygen/blood flow. This requires baby to be pushed back & a c-section done as an emergency. Babies have been known to turn head down the last week. Many OBGYNS opt to do a c-section as the least risky option for those reasons.
