A balanced diet, proper hydration and physical exercise are the main ways of avoiding constipation in the long run. Addition of above laxatives should help in case lifestyle changes do not result in eliminating constipation. If changes in bowel habits significant from baseline let your doc know as work up for medical causes may be needed.

If you have a tendency toward constipation, a good first step is usually to try increasing the amount of fiber in your diet. Adding Metamucil fiber (cilium) is a good idea in most cases.
