Very good evening doctors. what do you think about taking metamucil and or miralax on a daily basis to try to minimize constipation and to try to maintain regularity?

You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods. Consult this site for fiber foods. http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/high-fiber-foods/art-20050948 Wish you good health!

A balanced diet, proper hydration and physical exercise are the main ways of avoiding constipation in the long run. Addition of above laxatives should help in case lifestyle changes do not result in eliminating constipation. If changes in bowel habits significant from baseline let your doc know as work up for medical causes may be needed.

If you have a tendency toward constipation, a good first step is usually to try increasing the amount of fiber in your diet. Adding Metamucil fiber (cilium) is a good idea in most cases. It’s important to drink lots of liquid with the psyllium. If the constipation remains persistent, see your primary doctor or a gastroenterologist. Good luck.
