Both lack of sleep and mentration often trigger seizures. About half of women say they get more seizures during menstration. Often in young people the only time they have ever had a seizure is when they did not sleep all night and it may be the only seizure they have in their life. Agree with Dr. McFarlane's answers, but would add the following: If a neurologist treats your Mom with appropriate anti-epileptic medications, the seizures can be controlled and prevented. If meds fail, vagal nerve stimulators and even surgery are viable options. Unless this is stabilized, she cannot drive, do activities at heights, operate power equipment, or swim and bathe alone.
