Otosyphilis (syphilis of the inner ear) isn't very common, but it's been happening fairly frequently during the current exploding syphilis epidemic. It can happen with no other symptoms of syphilis. It would be quite rare only a few weeks after being infected. But maybe whoever had otosyphilis caught it a long time previously, and the recent exposure wasn't where the infection was acquired.
