A member asked:

If a neurologist ordered a pet scan to distinguish alzheimer's disease from frontal lobe dementia, would the patient have to have shown signs of either neurological disorder, or could the scan be ordered on a random hunch?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Since PET scans are quite expensive and are not always covered by insurance, it is imperative in many cases to obtain insurance pre-authorization. The listed indication may be appropriate, but you seem to lack confidence in your physician's guidance. A direct discussion and/ or a second opinion may be indicated.
