A member asked:

Would a neurologist order a pet scan for dementia if the patient displayed zero symptoms of dementia?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

A PET scan is of value in those rare dementia evaluations where the diagnosis is confusing between Alzheimer's and Frontotemporal Dementia, or there may be a mixed dementia. In most cases of dementia evaluations, it is not necessary and in view of expense may be excessive. Be assertive and discuss your concerns with the appropriate doctor.
