My husband's dr told him his white blood count is severely low and he has a infection but they don't know where. he also is experiencing extreme weight loss. should he go to a hematologist for extensive blood work to figure out what is going on?

Sorry, but it's impossible to judge without a lot more detail about his situation. It sounds serious, though. A hematologist probably isn't necessary, but for sure ask your husband's doctor. If an infectious diseases specialist isn't consulting on the case, that might be a reasonable next step. Best wishes and good luck to both of you.

Depending on details and local resources, either an infectious disease or hematology oncology specialist should get involved due to significant decline and likely more complications. His doc remains best to further coordinate.

He needs to consult a hematologist, an infectious disease specialist and a GI specialist. It not one or the other, all are imperative.
