What are other abnormalities and what is the reason for EKG? ST elevation is present in acute ischemic heart disease (heart attack) and it is usually associated with other symptoms such as chest pain with radiation or chest tightness with shortness of breath and diaphoresis (cold sweat). The EKG changes need to be interpreted along with other symptoms for an accurate diagnosis.

Having interpreted EKG's at 2 hospitals for over 35 years I've seen numerous EKGs that showed minor ST elevations in routine tracings. These were usually in young males under 40 & were normal variants called early repolarization. When minor ST elevations are seen in such males with atypical symptoms, we recommend repeat EKGs & if no serial changes occur, we can rule out an acute cardiac event.
