17 month old has sores all over mouth and is miserable..no body rash and no fever..he had hand foot mouth this past summer and it feels similar..but there is no fever? anything else cause sores all over mouth and pain? he also has a clogged tear duct?

He should be evaluated by your Pediatrician and a virtual consult with Healthtap is available. It is important to keep him well hydrated. Cool soothing thick fluids such as a milkshake are often effective. Avoid sour foods and liquids. Avoid sharp edges e.g.chips. An infection is a likely cause.

There are at least 3 viral strains capable of producing the HFM pattern of sores, and a few other viruses that infect just the mouth. A mixture of 1/2 to 1/2 milk of magnesia and Benadryl painted on the sores with a cotton but often provides some pain relief. Chilled applesauce keeps them fed and hydrated. If this gets to where he spooks you go see his doc.
