Chlorine is the primary agent used to keep pool water hygienic. The problem for asthma comes as the chlorine begins to form a gas when it leaves the pool surface through evaporation. It is worse on sunny days when the pool releases more, or if there is an excess in the water. Any such agent in gaseous form can trigger asthma. I know on no other agent used this way.
