A member asked:

I am 22 & have experienced sharp pain in my right chest periodically for 10ish years, always same spot. i have asthma but rarely get attacks. i always just thought it was pleurisy & it usually only lasts a few minutes and is gone for a while?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Sharp pains: Recurrent sharp, shooting chest pains, especially provoked by a deep breath, are often caused by a pinched intercostal nerve or muscle that runs between 2 ribs. Pleurisy pain can also be sharp & aggravated by a deep breath but usually lasts longer than minutes. Another possibility is a costochondral joint(junction of sternum &rib) derangement. A pulmonologist could evaluate and advise you.
