Both "home" pregnancy testing and serum tests for HCG hormone are extremely accurate. False negative testing can occur if performed prior to implantation but after fertilization of the egg, or rarely by reagent failure of the "home test", or tests performed after delays in ovulation resulting in later conception than anticipated by menstrual history.
