A member asked:

What are the basic tests always done on a spinal tap/lumbar puncture. i've had ongoing neurological symptoms, doctor suggests doing one to look for signs of inflammation. just wondering what the tests will show? thank you?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

A basic spinal tap on an acute basis looks to rule out various infections. An elective LP will ask about such disorders as multiple sclerosis or neuromyelitis optica. Amongst studies ordered include, cell count, protein, glucose, syphilis serology, cytology, immune panels looking especially at oligoclonal bands. Get this done and you will know "what the tests will show".
