When hyperventilating try to slow your breathing by breathing in and out with pursed lips( like whistling) or pinch one nostril and breath through the other. This will help you relax. You must also consider consulting a mental health professional to help you deal with worsening chronic stress, anxiety & grief. Trying to fight all these only lead to more problems including actual physical symptoms.

Would suggest getting in touch with your doc specifically due to progression of your shortness of breath that has to be worked up for medical reasons first. If no medical cause found then you can focus on alternative treatments if felt your hyperventilation is central and not triggered by inability to oxygenate properly.

It is not feasible to provide an opinion without additional history, physical examination may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor to see if you may be depressed. Depression is treatable. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. Start with low intensity exercise such as walking and gradually increase the intensity as tolerated. Drink more water. Wish you good health!
