Any preparation of vitamin D3 will do. Take 5000 units/day for three months and reduce the dose to 2000 units/day after that.

Severe vitamin D deficiency is defined when the level of D3 is less than 10. By my experience, this quite low level isn't rare in people with dark skin in winter season but quite rare in people with light skin. You can start with D3 5,000 units (125 mg) a day with most OTC products for 3 months & you can get the brand Nature Made @ Costco then have level rechecked in 3 months for dose adjustment.

If you can get 20 minutes of daily exposure to sunlight where you live, this will help boost the levels but agree that 5,000 units of daily D-3 is an excellent starting point. Aim for an eventual serum level of 50-70 ng/ml, which will take about 3-4 months.
