A member asked:

I have had pain for a year now since i herniated my l5-s1 disc into my sciatic nerve. a recent mri has shown that the disc has retracted and is no longer impinging the nerve. is the persisting pain a result of my sciatic nerve becoming sensitized?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It is conceivable that some superficial loss of the nerve root myelin covering or even the central axon damage occurred and this indeed can be the answer. This is best objectified if your doctor performs an EMG/ NCV study. Healing may take time depending upon the extent of compression prior to disk desiccation and shrinkage.
