A member asked:

Cannot get straight answers got another question.if someone is drinking 6-8 beers every evening and did in fact have ongoing cirrhosis of the liver would the ggt on bloodwork be normal?because i read the ggt would not be normal?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Even alcoholics without cirrhosis have elevated ggt. have noted that some patients with advanced cirrhosis don't have much elevation of AST,ALT and I suppose it could be true of ggt. I always attributed this to too many burnt out liver cells, but bear in mind,I'm referring to basically end stage liver disease. A hepatologist or gastroenterologist would be better able to answer your question,
