γ-Glutamyl Transferase (or GGT) is a lab test I order when evaluating hepatobiliary function, and usually elevated in serum as a result of liver disease and injury. However, GGT may be higher in chronic liver disease from alcohol than other causes because alcohol could induce GGT to leak into the blood from liver cells
