Scaphoid fractures are commonly caused by falling onto an outstretched hand. There is poor blood supply to the bone, and healing can take 6 weeks and beyond, requiring immobilization with a splint/cast. Repeat imaging can show whether healing is adequate. CT scans provide more 3-D information than plain films. An ortho or hand-specialist can determine prognosis after initial immobilization fails.

Fall onto wrist can fracture scaphoid bone and take 2 weeks to show up on X-ray and MRI. In meantime wear wrist split with built in thumb support. Best to see hand-wrist specialist for follow up and diagnosis to prevent long time disorder.
