Non-venomous insect bites typically cause localized redness, minor swelling, and pain/itchiness. These can be alleviated with topical steroid creams, calamine lotion, and warm compresses. Bites that cause ulceration or extensive/rapidly spreading redness should be examined and treated as an infection, such as cellulitis, which requires antibiotics.

Insect bite causes itching & significant pain is less likely unless you have bacterial superinfection. If the site is swollen with diffused redness & tenderness, you may have bacterial cellulitis. Because you will leave for a trip, it's better to have your lesions checked by a healthcare provider, just in case you need antibiotic. In the meantime, you can apply cold compress + taking ibuprofen OTC
