Bug bite scar: Bug bite scars are usually discolored with pigmentation . These insect bite scars can become dark and discolored. The pigmentation is caused by a postinflammatory hyperpigmentation that leads to pigment deposition by the melanocyte. Dermatologist can prescribe a topical hydroquinone or retinoid cream to treat the scar. He might also recommend a chemical peel.

Post inflammatory: Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a common and normal response during the healing process. When traumatized skin heals, redness, followed by dark discoloration often occurs. With time, the site will usually resume normal coloration to match the surrounding skin. Topical steroid creams applied initially can help reduce inflammation and prevent excessive discoloration. See doctor if red/hot.
