A member asked:

What amount of alcohol consumption (if any) is safe for a patient with diabetic peripheral neuropathy? most of the literature i've found has to do with alcohol abuse; is moderate, occasional drinking safe in any capacity for a symptomatic individual?

As per Center for Disease Control and Prevention, USA, 2 or less drinks a day for men & 1 a day for female, is generally okay to have. One drink equals 12 oz beer or 1.5 oz spirit or 5 oz wine. You should not drink if If the person is pregnant or may be pregnant, if you are younger than age 21. if you have certain medical conditions or are taking certain medications that can interact with alcohol

Although it would be best to abstain from alcohol together, for the sake of the pancreas and liver, very occasional moderate usage probably would not too much harm. Good luck.

A patient suffering from peripheral neuropathy caused by diabetes should abstain from alcohol. Neurological symptoms indicate that the persons blood sugar has not been well controlled and should likely exercise and diet. In addition, most alcoholic beverages contain a significant amount of carbohydrates, which will make blood sugar control even more difficult.
