A member asked:

This probably isn't a typical question that's asked here, but i'm wondering where the patient's money for the surgery goes? i know most of it goes to the surgeon/anesthesiologist, but where does the rest of it go to?

Fees go to the hospital or surgery center and pay for use of the OR, salaries for all the hospital's support staff like those who sterilize and stock surgical instruments used, the maintenance folks who do the cleaning, etc, etc. It could also include medications, IVs, and so on -- although some of these may be billed seprately. You'll probably see an itemized bill pretty soon.

According to a recent survey this past week, 46% of healthcare costs go to hospitals and only about 20% go to doctors, and this relative discrepancy has been similar for years.
