Perhaps: Pulmonary emboli are usually treated nonsurgically with blood thinners, or interventional radiology procedures. Surgery is only used in cases of extreme instability, in most cases. If the patient doesn't want surgery, a surgeon may be consulted anyway, to explain the risks of NOT having surgery, so that the patient can make an informed decision. Hope this helps!
