My 3 year old started having rare fits of dry coughing from today morning. we have some leftover cough syrup she was prescribed last time she was sick. can i give her the recommended label doses? she doesn't have a runny nose?

Please contact her doctor and if this continues or she has a fever or difficulty breathing,she should be examined. We can’t advise taking medicine here especially without knowing what the cough syrup is. Generally,most cough syrups aren’t recommended for this age group, but there are indications for it being prescribed.We also don’t know from your question when this was prescribed or at what dose.

There may be a respiratory infection or bronchospasm causing the symptom. Monitor temperature and breathing. Discuss viral testing including RSV, Flu and COVID-19. A cough syrup for children with honey is available over the counter. Nasal saline spray is often effective in reducing post nasal drip and congestion.
