Yes, it is a good idea to let his prescriber know about the family history of diabetes so that consideration can be given to substituting Abilify.

We cannot say that Abilify causes type II diabetes, although people who take it may be at higher risk (possibly due to other reasons like weight gain). However, the risk with Abilify is lower compared to other drugs within the same family. It is a good idea to make sure your son’s doctor is aware of the family history of diabetes to decide whether the drug is appropriate and how to monitor.
