The dose is too high if you take for several months. If you have vitamin D deficiency (level less than 30 but above 20), you can take 10,000 IU for 2 weeks then take a maximal dose of 5,000 IU through the fall and winter. You should have your level checked by spring to make sure the level is appropriate. Vitamin D intoxication is probably more dangerous to your body than vitamin D deficiency.

Try to limit your vitamin D intake to 4000 units/day. If you take 10,000 units then take the medication 2-3 times a week.
