There are a limited number of cases where surgical removal of a seizure triggering focus in the brain can help. However, the removal itself can create another seizure focus. Each case must be assessed as an individual one and treatment tailored to that case. Surgical treatment is often one of the last resorts after other methods have failed. It is not a preventive therapy.

If no specific inciting localized abnormal brain focus can be uncovered, and good control with anti-epileptic drugs can be achieved, there is no reason to anticipate success with surgery. It is unrealistic to think that a laser surgery would prevent epilepsy unless there is a localized brain lesion that requires extirpation.
