A member asked:

Can you explain why tinnitus or vertigo is listed as a side effect of all angiotensin receptor blockers? are they safe for people with meniere's disease or ear/ balance disorders? is tinnitus more common with irbesartan than the other arbs?

ARB's decrease blood pressure by relaxing veins and arteries and allowing the body to decrease the amount of fluids it retains by decreasing sodium and potassium, decreasing thirst and decreasing water reabsorption by the kidneys. In some people, this decrease in water retention can cause inner ear crystals to form causing tinnitus or vertigo.
