You are misunderstanding how a pacemaker works. Pacemakers send electrical pulses to help your heart beat at a normal rate and rhythm. Pacemakers can also be used to help your heart chambers beat in sync so your heart can pump blood more efficiently to your body. One's heart does not stop beating during a battery change. ref: https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/pacemakers

A standby external.pacemaker or a temporary pacemaker installed through the groin can be used during the pacemaker or battery change if a patient is dependent upon a chronic pacemaker for every heartbeat. This will be determined by the cardiologist before the appointment for the procedure.
